I led the industrial design of Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact AI system delivering 1,000 TFLOPS of performance in a remarkably small volume. The challenge was not only how to accommodate that technology, but how to give it a meaningful physical identity.
High-performance machines often announce themselves with aggressive geometry and visual noise. Instead, the question was how much could be removed while its character still emerged: a quiet monolith that communicates confidence through proportion, material and precision rather than decoration.
1,000 ventilation openings cross the upper surface, a quiet echo of its 1,000 TFLOPS. From a distance it reads as a single, understated object; up close, it reveals the intricacy of its construction. Designed from the inside out, every visible detail follows the architecture beneath.

Introducing Surface RTX Spark Dev Box
Process
The grid began as a thermal question: how much air can move through a surface that still reads as one quiet plane? A dual-layer intake draws cool air in without breaking the clarity of the form, and 3D-printed aluminum let the enclosure itself take part in cooling, bringing passive dissipation, active airflow and structure together. Along the way the design was stacked, stood upright, frosted and tinted, and prototyped in translucent shells, then refined down to the radius of a single hole, until every visible detail felt inevitable.
